Here's why I'm finally giving up my iPhone 12 Pro Max in favor of the iPhone 15 Ultra.
Yes, I get to use the trendiest and best phones every day for work, but when it comes to purchasing a new phone for myself, I'm incredibly fussy (and frugal). In actuality, I've had the reliable iPhone 12 Pro Max for about three years, and only now has it begun to age poorly.
For instance, I've seen that after numerous iOS updates, the battery life isn't as excellent as it once was and that sometimes apps take a long time to start or crash for no apparent reason. But the camera is where I have the most issues. It's fine, but the 48MP primary sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro Max's has made me envious of its quality. but not sufficient to improve.
Periscope zoom is coming
I must admit that I sigh each time I use my iPhone 12 Pro Max's 2.5 optical zoom feature. Particularly considering that the Pixel 7 Pro has a 5x periscope zoom and phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra provide two telephoto lenses with magnifications of 3x and 10x.
A lighter titanium design
The iPhone 15 Ultra/Pro Max is said to weigh just 7.8 ounces, thanks to a stronger yet lighter titanium design, whereas the most recent iPhone 14 Pro Max tops the scales at 8.47 ounces. This should increase the new iPhone 15 Ultra's durability while also making it more portable.
A powerful Action button
It appears that a new Action button will replace the ringer/mute switch that has been a staple of iPhones since the very first model. I was first disappointed by this because I enjoy how simple it is to operate, but it turns out that you can feel when the Action button enters silent mode.
And this button will be able to do more than just that. According to iOS 17 leaks, the Action button may be configured to execute a variety of tasks, like turning on the flashlight in the camera and carrying out a variety of additional customizable shortcuts. And I'm eager to use it and save time.
But what about the rumored price hike?
That's a significant sum of money. I feel prepared to make the purchase, though, as I intend to keep this new iPhone for at least three years and hope to receive at least a little discount when I turn in my iPhone 12 Pro Max.
With a brand-new periscope lens of its own, the iPhone 15 Ultra ought to change that. The range of the rumors varies; it may be 6x or 10x, but I'm still enthused about the possibility of a significant upgrade. Though we haven't heard any details yet, the digital zoom range ought to also represent a significant improvement.
There are two primary factors that make the Pro Max series superior to the standard Pro. The longer battery life is one, and my preference for a larger display is a second. My iPhone 12 Pro Max weights 8.04 ounces, which is a significant disadvantage.
Other iPhone 15 Ultra upgrades
In comparison to my iPhone 12 Pro Max, I would classify the following alleged iPhone 15 Ultra enhancements as good to have. These include a new 3nm A17 Bionic chip that, according to leaked benchmarks, promises to (again) outperform all Android phones. And although if an always-on display is a feature that first appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro, I like the concept of having one.
It will also be simpler for me to manage fewer cables if I go from Lightning to USB-C for charging.
The bad news is that a price increase for the iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra is rumored. According to some sources, it might cost $100 to $200 extra, which means the iPhone 15 Ultra's initial price could be a staggering $1,299 or more.
